American Gold Buffalo
The American Gold Buffalo coin was the first 24 karat gold bullion coin issued by the United States. The coins were first authorized by Congress in 2005 and minted for the first time in 2006. They were produced in addition to the 22 karat American Gold Eagle bullion coins, which had been produced since 1986.
The Gold Buffalo Coins have a purity of .9999 fine gold and have their weight, content, and purity guaranteed by the United States government. Coins were issued in bullion and proof versions during 2006 and 2007. Each coin had a gold weight of one ounce. For 2008, the offerings were expanded to include 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz fractional proof and collectible uncirculated coins.
