American Gold Eagle
The first gold bullion coin offered by the United States was the American Gold Eagle. This coin was first authorized in 1985 and minted and made available to the public starting in 1986. The Gold Eagle Coin has a composition of 22 karat gold or 91.67% gold with a balance of copper and silver. Each coin has its stated weight in gold guaranteed by the United States government.
American Gold Eagles are currently offered as bullion coins as well as collectible coins. Coins are available in a variety of different fractional weights including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. The collectible versions of the coin are available in proof and uncirculated versions.
